AI Tool Review: codeit

This review is part of a larger series of LinkedIn newsletters titled The Human Side of AI: Cutting through the AI noise to show you how AI can be a powerful tool for your creativity, efficiency, and strategy.

codeit is a versatile tool we regularly use at Cascade Insights® to analyze open-ends from surveys.

For example, we’ve recently used it to analyze open-ends from several brand research efforts and surveys that asked users how a given AI integration might help them in their daily workflows.

And codeit is AI-powered, which is always a plus for us.

What’s New Since We Last Reviewed This Tool in 2024: The headline addition since our initial review is Deep Dive, a natural-language chat interface for interrogating your coded data. codeit has also added native translation across 100+ languages and restructured its pricing into volume-based bundles, now available in multiple currencies. There’s a documented API for programmatic access too. Our updated take is below.

Visual and Interactive Analysis

codeit’s analysis features let researchers interact with a dataset visually. Whether you’re looking at sentiment analysis or cross-tabulated data, the tool provides a solid interface that makes it straightforward to dig deep into a set of open ends.

The analysis tools also make it easy to pull supporting evidence and summarize themes, then push the results into slides or written reports. The analysis dashboard makes it easy to see how much of your data has been coded, and it gives you an in-depth view of specific themes and codes.

The newest piece here is Deep Dive, codeit’s natural-language interface for exploring coded data. Instead of building a query, you just ask a question in plain English, something like “How do customers talk about my brand versus non-customers?”, and get a structured answer back, with charts you can export straight into a report. It handles subgroup comparisons (by demographic, region, time period, or whatever segment you care about) in seconds, and the answers link back to the underlying verbatims so you can verify what the AI actually drew from. For a firm that lives in open-ends, that traceability matters. I’m never asked to trust a black box.

AI-Driven Insights

codeit’s AI-driven analysis tools are where it shines. Market researchers can move through qualitative data at speed and surface the insights that matter. codeit also makes the overall research process more efficient, which means a faster time to insights, and less time spent on work an AI can handle better than a human.

Native translation across more than 100 languages is a real addition here too. For multi-market studies, coding and analyzing in-language without a separate translation step removes a whole layer of friction.

AI-Specific Callouts

codeit’s AI tools handle sentiment analysis and thematic breakdowns, and with Brand Coding they’ll tag brand mentions at speed. codeit also makes it easy for a researcher to review AI-generated codes and themes and adjust them as needed. You can also set “guardrails” for the AI, such as:

  • Setting the text-matching frequency for training.
  • Setting the confidence level the AI needs before it treats something as a match.

Overall, the AI integration in codeit gives any coding effort a huge jumpstart. With Deep Dive, that head start now reaches past coding and into analysis. Here’s the review:

Cost = Four Stars. Pricing is clearer now. It’s volume-based (you only pay for the verbatims you code), available in multiple currencies, with a 30-day free trial you can cancel at any time. My one gripe still holds, though. It’s an annual commitment, and in a world of ever-changing SaaS solutions, you like to keep your options open. A one-year commitment isn’t something I appreciate, for any SaaS solution.

Usability = Five Stars. In the original review I knocked off half a star because UI elements kept shifting around, due to what I could only assume was a rapid development loop under the covers. That churn has since settled, and Deep Dive’s plain-English interface makes the tool easier to pick up than it was.

Power = Five Stars.

Flexibility = Five Stars. Reinforced by 100+ language translation, a documented API, and volume-based bundles.
