Part of our ongoing series evaluating AI tools through a B2B lens.
Goldfish is a local “AI memory” that lives on your Mac. It watches what you do across your apps, the messages and docs and tabs you leave open, and keeps all of it in a database on your own machine. Press ⌥ Option in any text field and it will reply, write, summarize, or continue with that context already loaded. It writes in your tone. For now it is free.
Most AI tools start from zero and make you paste the backstory before they can help. Goldfish starts with the backstory. Joel Edholm, one of its two founders, calls the approach “contextmaxxing.”
Edholm and Kaspian Jakobsson, two Swedes, built Goldfish during Entrepreneur First’s “The Bridge” residency in San Francisco. It won Product Hunt’s Product of the Day in mid-June 2026 and counts go-to-market staff at companies like ElevenLabs and Vercel among its early users.
One caution up front. Treat this as a personal writing companion. It is not built to run as a team platform, and it shows. Judge it as the former and it earns its keep.
What It Does Well
- Context without the copy-paste. This is the whole point. Goldfish reads what is already on your screen and pulls from its local memory, so a reply in Gmail or Slack shows up with the thread and the relationship already accounted for. It takes the most tedious part of using AI at work, re-explaining yourself, and removes it.
- Writes in your voice, anywhere you type. One hotkey works in email, Slack, WhatsApp, Notion, the browser, your editor. It learns how you write for different apps and different people, so a draft reads like you wrote it.
- A local MCP bridge to Claude. For power users, Goldfish exposes your captured context to Claude Desktop through a local MCP server, so Claude can reason over your real work without any manual data transfer. If you already think in Claude, this is the most interesting thing on offer.
- Recall and a “wiki of your life.” It builds a browsable index of your work, surfaces the workflows you repeat, and flags follow-ups before they slip.
How Each Role Puts It to Work
- Seller (strongest fit). Reply to a prospect thread in Gmail or Slack with the full history and your last call’s notes already loaded, one keystroke instead of re-reading the chain. Summarize a long email thread before a call, or pull up what you agreed with an account last month from local memory. It will not touch your CRM, but it kills the re-reading tax on every follow-up.
- Marketer. Continue a half-written nurture email or LinkedIn post in your voice, using the campaign context already on screen. Turn a mess of competitor tabs and a Slack debate into a tight positioning note without re-pasting a word.
- Business Leader. The Claude bridge is the draw. Pipe your real work context into a strategy or synthesis session with Claude Desktop, no copy-paste required. Use the in-notch chat to recall a decision (“which vendor did we pick, and why”) and to draft team comms that sound like you.
- HR / People. Weaker fit. It can draft a candidate follow-up or a policy note in your tone, but it is a single-user tool with no shared or defensible record. Its always-on screen capture over résumés and comp data is exactly what an HR approver would want to lock down. Useful to one person. It is not an HR system.
- Finance. Weakest fit. Goldfish has no numbers-native capability and no data connectors, and there is no audit trail. It could summarize a budget-review thread, and that is the ceiling. This is not a finance tool, and dressing it up as one would be dishonest.
Where It Could Be Better
Alpha means alpha. Features and pricing can still move, and the tone-matching gets better the more it has watched you write. It is a single-user tool with no team admin, no shared memory, no SSO, and no audit logs, so it does not scale to a department as it stands. It has no connectors to your CRM, drive, or warehouse either; by design it reads the screen rather than plugging into systems, which is elegant but limits any structured work. And “free” is generous today, but it leaves the future price a question mark for anyone who has to plan a budget.
Why Not Just Use ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude?
Fair question. The generation runs on a general model (Azure OpenAI) under the hood, so the raw output is close to what you would get from a chatbot you already pay for. What you are buying is what wraps around the text field: the context it captures on its own, and the ⌥ Option habit that means you never paste a thread again. If you already feed your AI context by hand every time, you have most of what this offers. Most people never bother, and closing that gap is the whole pitch.
Security & Compliance
The posture is local-first. Your memory sits in a SQLite database on your Mac, nothing syncs to the cloud, and AI requests route through Azure OpenAI with zero data retention and no training on your data. You can pause capture or exclude specific apps and domains. What we could not find is any formal certification: no SOC 2, no ISO 27001, no stated GDPR or HIPAA posture. There are no enterprise controls either, like SSO or audit logs. For one person, local-first is a reasonable answer. The calculus changes for regulated data or a company-wide rollout, where the always-on screen capture is the question to put to the vendor before anyone installs it.
Data & AI Connectivity
No traditional integrations, and that is the design choice. Instead of connectors, Goldfish reads whatever is on screen and keeps it on your machine. Its one real outbound link is the local MCP server to Claude Desktop, which is useful and uncommon. There is no public team API or webhooks, and it does not read structured systems like a CRM or a warehouse. It reaches almost anywhere you type, but not into your systems of record.
Ratings
| Dimension | Rating | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Usability | 4.5 / 5 | One hotkey, works in any text field, and onboarding gets strong marks for being fast and obvious. |
| Power | 3.5 / 5 | A capable general model plus your own context: useful, though not a deep reasoning engine. |
| Flexibility | 3.0 / 5 | Broad across writing surfaces, narrow across roles and systems, and single-user only. |
| Cost | 4.0 / 5 | Free today is generous, but no published pricing makes future team budgeting uncertain. |
Best-Fit Roles
Strongest for sellers and marketers, useful to leaders through the Claude bridge, and marginal for HR and finance.
Conclusion
Goldfish solves one real problem well: you should not have to explain your own work to an AI over and over. For anyone who lives in a text field all day, sellers and marketers first, it takes that friction away and sounds like you while it does. Size it correctly, though. It is a personal companion still early in its life, and the judgment about what it should never see stays with you. Point it at your writing and keep it away from your most sensitive screens. Let your own read of the situation decide when a draft is ready to send.
