A cybersecurity company we work with was preparing to enter the cloud security market. Their VP of Product Marketing had a straightforward question: What do enterprise security buyers actually care about when evaluating cloud-native platforms?
She started where most teams start now. She asked ChatGPT. Within seconds she had a solid answer: integration with existing tools, compliance coverage, speed of deployment. Clear. Logical. Well structured. Also completely interchangeable with almost any other enterprise software category.
So she tried an AI-powered insights platform built on a large database of real buyer interviews. That got her closer. The answers reflected actual conversations, not just web content. Integration and compliance still showed up, along with a useful point about time-to-value during proof-of-concept trials. But she only queried the existing database. She didn’t layer in her company’s own sales call data. Didn’t ask the platform to recruit interviews with her specific buyer profile that she could customize, pivot, and re-target based on new insights that were uncovered after each interview..
Eventually the team commissioned a fully custom study. They spoke directly with enterprise security leaders who had recently evaluated cloud-native platforms. What came back changed their entire approach. The biggest barrier to adoption wasn’t technical. It was organizational. Security teams were losing influence in the buying process. Platform engineering teams were increasingly driving decisions.

We use some of these tools ourselves for specific tasks.

First: What level of the framework does my question live at?
If you need to know what competitors announced last quarter or how they’re positioning on their website, that’s Routine. Use AI tools. Build the fluency in-house, or bring in someone who already has it. For lean MR teams, this is where AI training investment pays back fastest. It expands what your team can produce without expanding headcount, and it frees up capacity for the work that actually requires your judgment.
If you need to understand common buyer objections in your category or validate existing messaging, that’s Interpretation. A good insight platform will likely get you there. Push the tools further before concluding you need a custom study, and when evaluating platforms, prioritize the ones with proprietary data depth rather than AI features built on commodity sources.
If you need to decide whether to enter a market, figure out what’s wrong with your product’s uptake or direction, evolve your messaging from scratch, or build competitive intelligence from human sources, that’s Strategy. You need a designed study with someone accountable for the recommendation.
If the insight depends on reading the person across the table, following an unexpected thread in a virtual environment, or drawing out what nobody planned to say out loud, that’s Engagement.
Second: What happens if I get it wrong?
